RUMORS & FAQS
Everything you need to know about the operation.
General
Bootlegging is an open-world survival crafting game set during 1920s Prohibition. You start as a small-time moonshiner and expand into a full criminal empire by crafting spirits, bribing officials, running cargo, and fending off federal agents.
Bootlegging is being developed for PC and will launch on Steam Early Access. Console versions may follow based on demand.
We haven't announced a release date yet. Wishlist on Steam to be notified when Early Access launches.
Bootlegging is built on Unreal Engine 5.
Yes! Bootlegging is being built by a solo indie developer.
Gameplay
Brewing involves managing your still, controlling temperature, and timing fermentation. You progress through 4 still tiers: Bathtub, Copper Pot, Column Still, and Industrial Rig. You can craft Moonshine, Corn Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, Gin, and Aged Bourbon with quality ranging from Rotgut to Premium.
Every action raises your wanted level—running your still, selling product, getting spotted. There are 5 wanted levels: Clear, Suspected, Wanted, Hunted, and Manhunt. Bribeable officials can help you cool things down.
Yes! Bootlegging features freeform base building anywhere on the map. Build with structural pieces, interior fixtures, and concealment systems. Advanced players can create hidden rooms, underground tunnels, and panic vaults.
There are 8 profession specializations: Distiller, Driver, Fence, Enforcer, Ghost, Farmer, Builder, and Chemist. Skill progression is action-based—you get better at what you do.
Multiplayer
Yes! Bootlegging is being built to support Solo play, Co-op for 2-4 players, and PvP Multiplayer (competing bootlegger gangs + a player Lawmen faction). These modes are planned for future updates.
In the planned co-op mode, you and up to 3 friends run a gang together. You can divide roles—one brews, one drives, one bribes. Teamwork makes the empire grow faster, but also increases your wanted level more quickly.
Technical
System requirements haven't been finalized yet. Since the game is built on Unreal Engine 5, we recommend a modern gaming PC with at least 16GB RAM and a dedicated GPU. Final specs will be announced closer to release.
